**Updated to a Category 5 hurricane

Hurricane Melissa has rapidly strengthened into a Category 5 storm and is now closing in on Jamaica with winds near 160 mph and dangerously slow movement. The island faces the threat of catastrophic winds, flooding up to 40 inches, and storm surges up to 13 feet along the southern coast. Officials have begun mass evacuations in low-lying areas as airports, power lines, and coastal infrastructure brace for what could be Jamaica’s most destructive storm in decades.

The logistics industry is expected to take a major hit. Ports are shutting down, roadways could be blocked by floods and landslides, and air-freight operations will likely be suspended. Warehouses and distribution centers face potential water and wind damage, while shipments may be delayed or rerouted. For freight brokers and carriers, early coordination, alternate routes, and strong communication with clients will be key to minimizing service disruption.
