Authorities in Macon County, North Carolina, have issued a public warning after several tire-puncturing devices were discovered scattered across a rural roadway. Deputies say the metal spikes were intentionally placed to damage passing vehicles, creating a serious hazard for motorists. The Sheriff’s Office is now investigating who is responsible and urging the public to report any suspicious activity or submit dash-cam footage that may help identify the person who placed the devices. Officials say even a single encounter with these objects can cause a blowout, loss of control, or leave drivers stranded in unsafe areas.

For truck drivers, incidents like this are especially alarming. A puncture on a steer tire or a blowout on a loaded trailer can escalate into a life-threatening situation within seconds. Large rigs need more distance to slow down, making unexpected road hazards even more dangerous. Drivers hauling freight through rural or poorly lit areas are encouraged to stay alert, scan the roadway for debris, and check their tires regularly. A small metal spike on the pavement might seem insignificant, but for a semi-truck traveling at highway speed, it can quickly turn into a major safety threat.
