A dramatic crash occurred early Thursday, November 6, 2025, when a semi-truck went off the Waskatenau Bridge along Alberta Highway 831, roughly five kilometers south of town. Emergency crews were called to the scene after reports that a tanker unit had gone through the bridge barrier and landed partially submerged in the river below. Snowfall and icy road conditions were reported in the area at the time of the incident, making recovery efforts difficult and slowing traffic across the bridge.

According to early information shared by 511 Alberta and confirmed by Lakeland Today, the highway remained closed for several hours as first responders assessed potential fuel leakage and structural safety concerns on the bridge. RCMP have not yet released details on the driver’s condition or the cause of the crash. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes while crews worked to secure the site and remove the wreckage from the icy river.
