The Colorado State Patrol (CSP) will conduct a one-day chain check operation on Thursday, October 23, 2025, along Interstate 70 near Dotsero. This inspection aims to ensure all commercial drivers are complying with Colorado’s must-carry chain law, which requires trucks traveling between mile markers 133 and 259 to have tire chains or approved traction devices on board from September 1 through May 31 each year.
Even though the weather is expected to be clear, CSP says these proactive checks help drivers prepare for sudden mountain weather and prevent costly highway shutdowns when snow hits. Truckers found without chains can face fines up to $579, and those who block traffic because of non-compliance can be fined over $1,100. Drivers have less than a day to get ready for this statewide enforcement push.
